Who can participate in KTRA's adaptive riding program?
KTRA serves children, youth, and adults who have a physical, cognitive, emotional, or social condition that benefits from adaptive riding. Past and current riders include individuals with cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, Down syndrome, brain injury, anxiety, depression, and other diagnoses. If you’re unsure whether adaptive riding is right for your family member, contact Ashley at asudds@ktra.ca — she’s happy to talk it through before you apply.
Do I need a doctor's referral to join?
Yes. All rider candidates must have a physician referral form completed before participating in the program. This is a requirement of both PATH International and CanTRA — the two certifying bodies KTRA is accredited through. It ensures every rider is medically cleared for horseback riding and that our instructors can design a session that’s safe and appropriate for them. How can I support KTRA if I can't ride or volunteer?
There are several ways to support KTRA financially. You can make a one-time or recurring donation via PayPal or Interac e-Transfer. You can become a Friend of KTRA for $100/year — your name goes on the barn wall and every dollar goes directly to the program. Or you can sponsor one of our seven therapy horses at the Bronze ($500/yr), Silver ($1,000/yr), or Golden Reins ($2,000/yr) level — each with meaningful recognition throughout the year. Every contribution directly funds the feed, farrier visits, veterinary care, and specialized treatment that keeps our horses healthy and our program running
Is KTRA a registered charity? Can I get a tax receipt?
Yes. KTRA is a registered Canadian charity — CRA number 139095640RR0001. Tax receipts are issued for all donations of $25 or more. You can donate online via PayPal, or send an Interac e-Transfer to giving@ktra.ca. For horse sponsorships, your receipt will reflect your annual sponsorship amount.
How is adaptive riding different from regular horseback riding?
In adaptive riding, every session is individually designed around the rider’s unique needs, abilities, and goals — not a one-size-fits-all lesson. KTRA’s PATH International certified instructors use adaptive tack, modified teaching strategies, and trained volunteers (horse leaders and side-walkers) to ensure every rider can participate safely and comfortably. The horses are also carefully selected for their calm temperament, smooth movement, and experience working with riders of all abilities. What makes it different isn’t just the adaptations — it’s the relationship between the rider, the horse, and the instructor.
How do I register and how long is the waitlist?
KTRA runs four sessions per year — Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall — at Koalrock Equestrian in Kamloops. There is an active waitlist. To join it, download the Rider Application, have your physician complete the referral form, and email both to Ashley at asudds@ktra.ca. Ashley will be in touch to confirm your place on the list. Registration for each session opens a few months in advance — check our Session Registration page for current dates.
